Teaching

Meghan is available for teaching evening private lessons. She previously taught at the Ottley Music School. She has taken classes in harp pedagogy and taught during college. She is available to teach both total beginning musicians and more experienced students. She teaches the "Salzedo" method of technique. She can teach both pedal harp and folk harp. In addition to being classicaly trained, she is an experienced folk and rock harpist Additionally, she has experience playing renaissiance and gothic harps. She cannot teach and has no experience with single action, chromatic, double/triple strung, or wire strung harps.

Teaching Rate $30 / hour, $20 / half hour
Typically beginners and young children have half hour lessons, while more advanced students have hour long lessons due to length of music, but these times are left to student preference. Lessons are usually weekly but Meghan is willing to teach on a bi-weekly or monthly basis as well.
Teaching Hours Meghan is only available for late evening lessons. These are weekdays after 6:30pm.
Teaching Location Meghan teaches from a private studio in her home in Laurel, Maryland. She has a concert grand pedal harp, Lyon & Healy folk harp, and electric lever harp to provide lessons on. She is also willing to meet students at their own home if the student has a harp, and lives within 20 minutes and 10 miles of Laurel.
Harp Rental/Purchase Resources Students typically begin on a lever harp since they are smaller and cheaper. There are various resources in the DC metropolitan area for purchasing and renting harps. You may wish to seek guidance from your teacher before purchasing a harp. If the harp is not from a standard manufacturer it is important to make sure string spacing and tension are the same. A few common manufacturers are Triplett, Dusty Strings, Lyon & Healy, Salvi, Camac, and Venus.

Harp Accessories In addition to a harp, playing the harp requires a few accessories. Some of these may be provided with the harp you purchase/rent. Many are available from Harp.com or the locations above. Electronic tuners and metrinomes are available from any music store, however be sure to get an electronic tuner that can support the wide range of the harp. A tuner pickup is useful for tuning in noisy locations. You may wish to seek guidance from your teacher before buying many of these things. The following is a list of useful items :

Harp Music/Method Books Meghan has used the following books to teach first time harpists. Music is also available from Harp.com. She is not set on these books and will adjust music and style to the students preferences.
